Kente Cloth

Kente Cloth – This cloth is made by the Ashanti people of Ghana.  An Ashanti legend tells of two friends who had gone into the forest to hunt, they came across a giant spider who was spinning her web.  They were so taken by this process that they stayed there, contemplating the spider for two days.  They returned home and imitated the animal and wove a cloth out of raffia.  This is how the very first Kente cloth was born – which was offered to the King, or Asantehene, who was so amazed by it that he elevated the weavers to the rank of royalty and they became the kings exclusive tailors.
